Police ID man dead in Westport mass shooting in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY — Law enforcement investigating a deadly shooting in Kansas City has identified the man who died as Jahquan M. Robinson, 24, according to KCPD Capt. Jake Becchina.

Just before 1:30 a.m. On Sunday, Westport Entertainment District police responded to the sound of gunshots near the intersection of Westport and Broadway, according to Sheriff Daryl Forte.

First responders found several gunshot victims. EMS responded and treated the victims for non-life-threatening injuries. Emergency medical services and a private vehicle transported six victims to an area hospital where Robinson was pronounced deceased.

A preliminary investigation indicated the shooting was the result of a disturbance that escalated into gunfire, according to KCPD.

The subject of interest who was arrested early Sunday is now out of custody. They were released pending further investigation. The subject is a Westport Public Safety Security employee/guard who went to this area after hearing the sound of gunfire. Detectives will continue to investigate and compile all findings of the investigation detailing the involvement of all individuals and will provide those findings to prosecutors for review.

Police believe there are many witnesses since a large crowd near the scene of the shooting dispersed when shots were fired. Detectives and crime scene investigators have examined the scene for evidence and also wish to speak with anyone who was in the area at the time of the shooting.
