Police await autopsy of Canadian tourist Neno Dolmajian who died after alleged assault in Dublin – The Irish Times

Gardaí are still awaiting the final results of the autopsy of Canadian tourist Neno Dolmajian, who died this week after an alleged assault in Dublin city centre.

Dublin District Court heard on Friday that the results of the autopsy will inform the prosecution of Ionut Danca, 24, who has been charged with assault causing harm in connection with the attack.

Mr Dolmajian (41) was visiting Ireland from Montreal when he was allegedly attacked on O'Connell Street Upper on June 23 at 12:40am.

At a previous hearing it was heard that Mr Dolmajian approached a group of people believed to have included Mr Danca on Cathal Brugha Street.

They had a conversation that escalated into an argument. One of the group members allegedly hit Mr. Dolmajian.

The group then headed towards O'Connell Street where there was another interaction with Mr Dolmajian, the court heard.

One person allegedly pushed Mr. Dolmajian before Mr. Danca “kicked him in the face while running.”

Detective Sergeant Eoghan Byrne said the tourist was hit head-on.

Mr. Dolmajian was taken to hospital where he remained unconscious until his death on Tuesday.

Mr Danca, of Rathdown Square, North Circular Road, Dublin, is one of four people arrested in connection with the incident. He appeared at Cloverhill Magistrates Court on Friday wearing a grey tracksuit and speaking with the help of a Romanian translator.

His lawyer, Stephen O'Mahony, said “things were quite complicated”. He added that his client had been refused bail last week.

Mr Danca remains in custody at Cloverhill Prison and no further bail applications were made on Friday.

In an update to the court, Detective Sergeant Byrne confirmed Mr Dolmajian had died and said gardaí were awaiting the final results of a post-mortem examination.

The results “will give an indication of the direction this case is likely to take,” he told the court.

Mr O'Mahoney applied for legal aid. He said Mr Danca, who worked in construction, had lost his job since his arrest.

Judge Alan Mitchell granted legal aid and adjourned the case until July 30, when Mr Danca will appear by video link. He also ordered the presence of a Romanian interpreter.
