Police arrest two for stabbing Hawa Koomson's son in Kasoa

Police say the incident happened around 5 a.m. on Sunday.

Ghanaian police say they have arrested two people in connection with unrest in Kasoa that led to the stabbing of one person.

Although the police report did not indicate who was injured, a previous report by GhanaWeb showed that the said individual is the son of Awutu Senya East Constituency MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Ato Koomson, according to myjoyonline.com report, was stabbed in the chest and is currently in critical condition at the 37 Military Hospital.

The police statement added that the incident occurred around 5 a.m. on Sunday June 2, 2024.

“Ghana Police have arrested two persons in connection with disturbances at the Electoral Commission office in Ofaakor, near Kasoa in the Central Region, today Sunday June 2, 2024 at around 5am.

“The disruption that followed this dawn due to the queue before the start of the day's activities at the EC office resulted in the injury of one person. Calm has since returned to the registration center. The suspects are in custody as part of the police investigation,” the statement said.

The son of Awutu Senya East MP and Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has allegedly been stabbed.

The incident reportedly occurred following a mix-up near the Electoral Commission office in Kasoa, reports myjoyonline.com.

Ato Koomson, the MP's son, was rushed to Military Hospital 37 after being stabbed and is said to be in critical condition.

The report adds that its sources indicate that another person was also injured during the altercation.

An eyewitness, who shared details of what happened, said the confusion began when supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) “were in disagreement over the position of some residents in line in the ongoing voter identification process.” card transfer and replacement exercise.

According to the source, the practice was that some people from both parties reserved seats for people waiting in line by placing chairs there, but in one case there was a disagreement over who sat in a particular chair.

The situation escalated, the source said, with Ato Koomson arriving about 45 minutes after the disagreements and allegedly contacting the NDC organizer at the registration center to help resolve the issue.

But another NDC member instead started insulting the MP's son, the source added.

In the ensuing scuffle, the alleged NDC member pulled out a knife and stabbed Koomson in the chest, an NPP member who also suffered a minor cut, King Adawu also shared.

Regarding how he was also cut, King Adawu was quoted as saying that he was trying to block the knife, which resulted in his injuries.

Although he was rushed to the hospital along with Ato Koomson, the latter remained on admission, while Adawu was discharged, the report said.

Meanwhile, the report states that police have arrested the main suspect as part of their further investigation.
