Police arrest New Jersey man accused of unprovoked stabbing of driver through car window

A man accused of stabbing a driver who was trying to exit a parking lot was apprehended by authorities Saturday.

The incident happened Friday around 5:30 p.m. on Sylvan Avenue in Englewood Cliffs. The 30-year-old victim was in a car leaving a parking lot on Sylvan Avenue when the suspect approached the vehicle, the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office said.

Harshkumar H. Patel, 29, of Piscataway, was arrested Saturday. He is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and weapons offenses.

Patel is accused of approaching the driver's car as it was leaving the parking lot and stabbing the victim multiple times through an open window before fleeing the scene, the prosecutor's office said.

The attack was unprovoked; the victim does not know Patel, the office said.

The victim was treated at hospital Friday and has since been released.

Patel is in custody and awaiting his first court appearance.
