Police arrest murder suspect near state border – First State Update

Delaware State Police have identified Malachi Waters, 19, of Millsboro, as the suspect involved in a fatal shooting that occurred Tuesday morning. The incident left one person dead, a 26-year-old man.

Officials said that around 10:47 a.m. on June 4, 2024, officers from the Millsboro Police Department and Delaware State Police responded to a shooting on Saint Thomas Boulevard in the city limits of Millsboro. Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim suffering from a gunshot wound and immediately began lifesaving efforts. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Given the seriousness of the case, the Millsboro Police Department requested assistance from the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit to take over the investigation. Preliminary findings indicated that Waters approached the victim, brandished a firearm and fired several shots before fleeing the scene in a vehicle, police said Wednesday.

Shortly after the incident, detectives spotted the suspect's car. With support from the Delaware State Police Special Operations Response Team, troopers intercepted the vehicle near the Delaware-Maryland border in Delmar. Waters attempted to escape on foot but was apprehended in Delmar, Maryland.

When extradited to Delaware, Waters will face charges including first-degree murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The Delaware State Police Homicide Unit continues to actively investigate this case.
