Police and first responders call off search for teenager in Genesee River in Belfast

A 16-year-old boy went missing while swimming with friends in the Genesee River, according to law enforcement searches conducted Thursday evening.

The search began early Friday and recovery efforts will begin as soon as daylight breaks.

Here is a statement from the Allegany County Sheriff's Office:

Last night, the Allegany County E911 Communications Center received a call from a swimmer who had failed to resurface in the Genesee River near Oramel.

Several area fire, emergency and law enforcement agencies, including the New York State Police SCUBA Team, Allegany County Drone Team , along with resources from the Allegany County Office of Emergency Services responded and were involved in this reported drowning incident.

Unfortunately, after hours of searching with no luck, the issue is now transitioning to a recovery effort.

The replay is canceled for this evening. It’s still an active scene.

Please do not attempt to walk, drive or enter the area. Law enforcement, firefighters and emergency medical services will resume recovery efforts in the morning.

The Belfast school will have counselors available.
Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers. No further information will be released at this time.
