Point Fire: Sonoma County homeowners describe how firefighters saved their homes from wildfires

SONOMA COUNTY, Calif. (KGO) — It's been a scary 24 hours for homeowners living near Point Fire in Sonoma County.

“Very scary,” Mel Harold said.

Mel Harold watched the Point Fire grow quickly Sunday, driven by high winds. The fire ravaged Raymond Burr Vineyards where Mel works as a caretaker. He was ordered to evacuate but refused. The fire destroyed a cattle pen, but firefighters prevented it from taking over the main house and tasting room.

“I'm still in shock, even though it devastated the property, I'm grateful we didn't lose anything else,” Harold said.

Other structures were lost in the fast-moving wildfire along Dry Creek Road.

“I know the fires, not the June fires, that’s not normal,” Jeff Kowell said.

Kowell says that wildfire triggered memories of two nightmares.

“I lost my house in the Tubbs Fire and then I lost my house on Mill Creek Road, it was so crazy,” Kowell said.

CAL FIRE says 400 firefighters are on the ground and in the air trying to stop this fire. For now, the elements are on their side – winds less violent than Sunday.

“We're doing a lot of work, a good attack on the fire, keeping firefighters and the public safe,” said Jason Clay, CAL FIRE spokesman.

“It was so close but it didn’t happen,” Kathy Clendenen said.

Kathy and John Clendenen were out of town when they received a frightening call from their son.

“He said be ready, we're probably going to lose the house, be ready,” Clendenen said.

Their son Ross took photos of the fire heading toward the family home, but firefighters were able to defend against the flames just meters away.

“They had a serious attack but the winds were terrible and the fire split at an unusual speed,” John Clendenen said.

Their son removed valuables from the house using a list Kathy and John posted near their front door in case of fire. This family is beyond grateful to the firefighters.

“Today is actually my birthday, I said all I want is my house, so I got my present,” she said.
