Point Fire: Local emergency declared for wildfire burning Stewarts Point-Skaggs Springs Road near Lake Sonoma in Sonoma County

SONOMA COUNTY, Calif. (KGO) — The Point Fire in Sonoma County has grown to just over 1,200 acres and is now 50 percent contained.

They say improved conditions and calmer winds Monday helped them bring the fire under control.

The Point Fire came dangerously close to animals and structures at Raymond Burr Vineyards, burning part of their property.

“Thanks to the firefighters on the property here last night, I think it’s because of them that we’re still here and things are still standing,” said Taylor Brinkman, an employee at Raymond Burr Vineyards.

The Vineyard was among more than 400 homes and businesses placed under evacuation orders on Father's Day as the Point Fire spread.

In two days, the flames destroyed two homes and several other structures.

Efforts to contain the fire continue.

“Usually it's just hard work getting to the scene, firefighters finding these hot spots along the edge and then as they get there, working further out and doing what we call build depth or simply work toward the center of the fire,” Robert Foxworthy, a Cal Fire spokesman, said.

As wildfires continue to burn, scientists across California are studying the links between these events and climate change.

Fires with hot spots keep firefighters busy, so officials say it's not yet safe to lift evacuation orders.

“The only reason to keep the public out is for safety,” Foxworthy said. “I can tell you that we are working to get people home as quickly as possible.”

Meanwhile, another massive fire is burning further north in Colusa County.

The Site Fire exploded to 10,000 acres overnight, but Cal Fire has no plans to pull its resources from Sonoma County.

“Even if new fires occur, we will not move resources or send resources to another incident that could cause problems in the current incident, so we are conserving as many resources as necessary,” Foxworthy said .

Cal Fire says the goal for Tuesday is to reinforce containment lines.

They will also carry out major search operations.

Parts of the Bay Area are under an air quality advisory until at least Wednesday due to smoke coming from the Point Fire.

Although this is downgraded from Monday's “Spare The Air” alert, residents in Sonoma, Napa and Solano counties should still consider limiting time spent outdoors, especially people who have respiratory.

Right now, 26 fires are burning in California as the weather begins to warm up.

Fifteen of them started this weekend and have already burned more than 20,000 acres.
