PMC to prioritize road widening at 33 key locations to reduce traffic congestion

In a bid to reduce traffic congestion in the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced plans to prioritize the development of 33 crucial points for road widening, which the civic body believes will benefit the commuters and reduce traffic jams. .

The PMC Road Department and the police identified 33 chronic traffic congestion points after conducting an inspection and comprehensive study called Road Safety Improvement Plan, based on inputs from citizens and the traffic department. The two departments have collectively made recommendations aimed at improving road safety and ensuring smooth travel.

PMC Commissioner Dr Rajendra Bhosale said, “We have identified over 30 locations in the city, which will be developed under a road widening initiative to reduce traffic congestion. These sports have been identified, we need to make few changes and for some places we will even need redevelopment to widen the roads. The redesign will include removing poles in some areas, adding some signals and U-turns. Our team has inspected the areas and we will begin work to resolve the traffic jams.

Bhosale said the civic body and the police department would meet soon to choose the junctions. “According to the study conducted by PMC and police, most of the junctions could be easily decongested by making minor changes like repairing traffic lights and moving encroachments away from the road. In some stretches, we found that even by reducing the sidewalk size, the flow of traffic can be improved.

These places in priority

According to the PMC, although all roads need to be decongested, the first work would begin with Koregaon Park roads. PMC will repair the missing road link from Gangadham to Tullanagar on Baner sus Road. Ahmednagar Road, Wagholi, Pune-Solapur Road, Navle Bridge are among those which will be repaired. However, most of this work would involve repairing proper signage, relocating bus stops and creating a pedestrian path. or concrete dividers, increasing the height of the speed controlling divider, establishing an appropriate turning radius, removing temporary encroachments and fixing appropriate markings on roads as well as pedestrian crossings to ease traffic flow.
