Planet Fitness is offering free passes for teens this summer

SOUTH POINT, Ohio (WSAZ) – Planet Fitness is inviting teens to its gyms for free this summer.

Starting this Saturday, the national chain will offer free summer membership to any high school student aged 14 to 19.

“Where it’s free, it allows everyone to participate,” said Braeden Hammar, director of South Point Planet Fitness.

Hammar says the free memberships have already generated a lot of response.

“A ton of kids, we have a lot of kids in the area, especially close to West Virginia,” he said.

Removing the barrier of cost can give teens a healthy outlet during the summer.

“There are many studies on how exercise influences our brain chemistry and physical makeup. It’s just a really good advantage,” Hammar said. “Even if it’s just getting in and walking on the treadmill for 5 to 10 minutes a day, as long as you’re moving and getting your blood circulating, it’s pretty positive.”

The gym can also be a great place to socialize.

“Some children don't live near each other and they spend most of their time at school. It allows them to hang out with their friends, train with their friends,” Hammar said. “They can come here instead of staying at home. If they are younger, they may not have a job every day. This opens up something else for them.

All teens who meet the age criteria are eligible to join the promotion even if they already have a Planet Fitness membership. Those currently paying for gym access can freeze their account and enroll in the program.

Teens can sign up online or on the Planet Fitness app.

Teenagers under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to register.
