Plane with two on board crashes in South Carolina near golf course, sheriff says

A plane crashed Sunday in the Midlands region of South Carolina, according to the Saluda County Sheriff's Office.

Both occupants of the two-passenger plane were transported by helicopter to a hospital, the sheriff's office said in a news release. Further information about their conditions was not available.

A spokesperson for the Saluda County coroner told The State his office was not requested to respond to the crash scene or the hospital.

A plane has crashed, according to the Saluda County Sheriff's Office.

The plane crashed in the area between Persimmon Hill Golf Course and the Saluda County Airport, according to the release.

No information has been released on the cause of the crash, but the sheriff's office said the FAA is investigating. It is unclear whether the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is also investigating the crash.

No information was available about the location and time of departure of the plane, as well as its intended destination.

In addition to the sheriff's office, Saluda County EMS and firefighters responded to the crash.

Minutes after the crash, firefighters were dispatched to an unrelated structure fire on the other side of the county because hot temperatures and high humidity created “tinderbox” conditions, according to the sheriff's office of Newberry County.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
