Places to Visit Near Campus –

Visit the AMC Ford City 14 Le Xavierite

While the Saint Xavier campus has much to offer, boredom allows. If you're looking to explore some places near campus, whether it's a place to shop or a place for new restaurants, we've got your freshman bucket list covered. Here are some of our favorite places near campus that we recommend exploring while you attend SXU.

Shopping – Second chance economy

One place we highly recommend frequenting is Second Chance Thrift. Located at 10444 S Kedzie Ave, just up the street from campus, Second Chance is perfect for students who love physical media or those trying to expand their wardrobe on a budget. They sell used clothing, kitchenware, and furniture, as well as books, CDs, DVDs, and a variety of other items.

Second Chance has many choices for both men and women. When big brands failed to deliver on style or affordability, this store offered me a way to dress the way I wanted without hurting my pockets or compromising my desires.

Not only is Second Chance a great place to shop, but it's also a place where students can go to relax instead of waiting in their cars between classes.

Entertainment – AMC Ford City 14

Another place you might want to attend is the AMC Ford City 14. Located at 7601 S. Cicero Ave, the closest movie theater to campus. As the name suggests, they have fourteen theaters and always show a good mix of recent films and classics. Without many friends at the start of the year, I relied on AMC to entertain me on lonely nights.

Some of my fondest memories of the last year were made in this theater, from immersing myself in the racing scenes of “Gran Turismo” to shivering in my seat watching “A Haunting in Venice “. The seats are nice and traffic is light throughout the day, allowing for a more intimate experience with the movie you choose to see.

Although it's smaller than some other AMCs in the area and they don't have all the amenities of a high-end movie theater, you can count on low traffic throughout the day, providing an experience more intimate with the film you I'm going to see.

Food – Huck Finn Restaurant

The third place we recommend trying for a good dining experience is Huck Finn in Oak Lawn. It never fails to disappoint. I distinctly remember it being one of the first places I went as a freshman at Saint Xavier.

Huck Finn is open 24 hours a day and is less than ten minutes from campus. People recommended it to me early on and I vividly remember nights spent at 2 a.m. studying and hanging out with new friends.

The community values this establishment as much as the students in the region. The restaurant is not only open all the time, but also offers affordable prices for students on a budget.

Huck Finn serves breakfast all day as well as some lunch and dinner favorites. My choice would be the grilled cheese with added Swiss and bacon. I remember my friends also enjoyed their special soups, which changed depending on the day.

You can visit Huck Finn at 10501 S Cicero Ave in Oak Lawn.

Café – Two Mile Café Bar

When it comes to coffee, Two Mile Coffee Bar is a coffee shop near campus that has a lot to offer. They recently expanded their space to allow more room for people who want a place to relax or study. Their cafe menu and food menu offer an unbeatable combination that students should explore if they want to venture off-campus in an atmosphere conducive to productivity.

I've been to several coffee shops, many of which are close to campus, and no place beats Two Mile. My favorite is an iced vanilla latte. They also have four new drinks for each season that are exciting to explore.

You can find Two Mile at 9907 S Walden Parkway in Chicago. They have limited street parking.
