Pittsburgh carjacking arrests: weapons, ammunition and drugs seized

PITTSBURGH, PA — Three people were arrested in connection with a weekend carjacking incident in which several guns, ammunition and drugs were confiscated.

Pittsburgh police on Monday identified those arrested as Darius Balthrop, 18, and two juveniles. Balthrop is charged with theft of a motor vehicle, grand larceny, carrying a firearm without a license, making terroristic threats and several counts of possession. The juveniles were placed on juvenile probation.

After obtaining a search warrant for the stolen vehicle because firearms were in plain sight inside, police recovered three handguns, an AR-style pistol, ammunition, magazines, marijuana , crack and several cell phones.

The carjacking took place Saturday evening at Crawford Street and Center Avenue in the Hill District; the driver is unhurt.

Less than 30 minutes after the initial police call, multiple units stopped the vehicle on East Carson Street, between 23rd and 24th streets on the city's South Side. The three men were arrested and positively identified by the victim, police said.
