The teenager who died in a horror accident after becoming trapped between two tram carriages has been identified.

Kyra Dulguime, 16, was killed while climbing onto two tram cars early Thursday morning.

Emergency services rushed to the Haymarket tram tracks in Sydney shortly after midnight after reports a teenager had been hit by a tram.

Kyra Dulguime was identified as the girl killed in the incident.

The girl was trying to climb through the exterior link that connects one car to another, NSW police officers told Seven News.

Police said when the tram began to pull away from the Goulburn Street intersection, the teenager became stuck.

The girl is believed to have been dragged for around 100 meters while her distraught friend screamed for help, alerting the driver to stop at the China Town tram station.

Friends began paying tribute to the young woman following her tragic death.

“I love you and missed you, our beautiful angel Kyra Dulguime, we missed you so much…” one said on social media.

“Rest in peace in the arms of our Lord and may perpetual light shine upon you.”

Witnesses told Nine News the teenager attempted to cross George Street by jumping through the gap between two cars before becoming trapped under the tram.

“We were shouting 'help her, help her', so the police and paramedics rushed to the scene,” one man recalled.

Passengers on board the tram could only watch in horror as the tram stopped.

A police rescue team, with assistance from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW), worked to free the girl.

Paramedics treated her at the scene, but she died at the scene.

The 52-year-old tram driver was taken to hospital for mandatory examinations.

A crime scene has been established and an investigation is currently underway into the circumstances of the accident.

Light rail services between Central and Circular Quay were disrupted throughout the morning while investigators canvassed the scene.

The tram has since been canceled and regular schedules have resumed from 6 a.m. on Thursday.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
