HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A student was arrested after being pulled over with a gun Thursday morning at Phoebus High School in Hampton, police said.

Hampton Police confirmed to 10 On Your Side that the student is in custody and they are preparing to release more information.

Phoebus chief executive David Coccoli said in a statement to parents that the student was caught with the weapon during a routine weapons check and that a security guard “was quickly intervened and immediately confiscated the weapon.

“At no time was there any threat to the school, students or staff,” Coccoli said. “This is currently an ongoing HPD investigation and based on its findings, HPD will bill the student appropriately. While I cannot provide details on student discipline, please be advised that the student will not be on school grounds and will be disciplined in accordance with the HCS Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook.

Coccoli added: “The safety and security of our students and staff are our top priorities, and we will continue to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of our schools. We value partnering with our students and families to maintain the safety we all want for our school. THANKS.”
