Pennsylvania Avenue attempted murder defendant sentenced to 30 years in prison

Judge Charles H. Dorsey of Baltimore City Circuit Court sentenced a 44-year-old Baltimore man on June 6 for attempted murder in 2022.

Calvin Hemphill was convicted of attempted second-degree murder, use of a firearm in commission of a violent crime and carrying a handgun for an incident in the block of 1500 houses of Pennsylvania Avenue on April 4, 2022.

For attempted second-degree murder, life sentence, suspended except 30 years, with five years supervised probation. For use of a firearm during a violent crime, Hemphill will serve a concurrent sentence of 20 years, suspended for all but nine years, with the first five years without the possibility of parole. For having a handgun on his person, Hemphill will serve a concurrent three-year sentence.

According to Maryland District Court documents, on April 4, officers with the Baltimore Police Department responded to a call about a shooting in which the victim was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. There were traces of shell casings and blood at the crime scene.

The evidence also included video footage of Hemphill wearing a face mask and all-black clothing, walking toward the crime scene. Video footage showed Hemphill pointing a handgun at the victim before the shooting.
