Pennington County Sheriff's Office Reminds Drivers to Stay Safe on July 4th

RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – While the Fourth of July is traditionally a time of celebration and travel, it also carries a higher risk of traffic-related accidents and injuries.

As the holiday approaches, officials are urging drivers to prioritize safe driving practices to ensure a safe and accident-free Fourth of July.

Casey Kenrick is a lieutenant with the Pennington County Sheriff's Office and says increased traffic and celebrations can lead to a higher risk of accidents and he advises drivers to be patient with each other.

“There will be people around who aren’t from here looking out their windows and not knowing where they’re going, so we have to be patient with each other and be good neighbours. We’ll obviously have extra officers on site to make sure everyone is safe and hopefully we can have a good holiday without any major incidents,” Kenrick said.

The holiday also leads to increased alcohol consumption, and Kenrick stresses the importance of having a designated driver.
