Penelope and Colin are missing something

Spoiler alert! The following contains details from “Bridgerton” season 3.

Dear dear reader,

I must admit that I expected more from this season. Perhaps I was spoiled by “Queen Charlotte” or by the previous diamonds of the Netflix series “Bridgerton”. Although the diamond of this season may have been the charming and understated Francesca Bridgerton, it was truly Penelope Featherington's time to shine.

And she did it brilliantly. Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) came out of the shadows, stood up for herself, and stood out from the noble crowd, and I'm here for it. She also eventually caught the attention of her longtime crush and good friend, Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton), among other eligible bachelors.

Penelope may have forgiven Colin for the horrible things he said about her, but I haven't. I looked at him with a raised eyebrow, wondering when he would prove himself worthy of such a hidden gem – or even just more interesting than a traveler, an apparent carousel and an alleged writer – and continuing to be more disappointed than the queen (Golda Rosheuvel). I want to be entertained, after all.

Penelope wasn't wrong when she admitted to him that she had said horrible things about him because she had been hurt and she was wondering where old Colin had gone. Me too sister. The Colin we saw in season one when he courted Marina (Ruby Barker) was bold, funny, kind and supportive. In the second season, he even sought her out to make sure she was happy.

Where is this same energy for the beautiful Pen?

But when he defended her to her vicious mom (Polly Walker) and told her how much he respected her, was attracted to her, and loved her, I finally melted a little. That's a good start, Mr. Bridgerton.

Now, dear reader, I must apologize for perhaps seeming horny in the main show, but I also wanted more intimate moments between Colin and Penelope. The plot is enjoyable, but the spices are even more so.

“Bridgerton” didn’t shy away from sexy escapade scenes, especially those of the season’s central couples. And not just the main, uh, event – you know, the lustful thrusts and such – but the charged looks, the gentle touches, the desire, the pretty words and the stirring declarations.

We saw more of the daily love and intimacy of her brother Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and his new wife, Kate (Simone Ashley). I might even be a bit of a hypocrite because during a scene between them I muttered “get off her” while Anthony almost smothered her with affection and barely let her talk to other people during a party.

There were a lot of storylines and commitments to tie up this season, and I appreciate the groundwork that sets up future seasons (I'm looking forward to hearing more about Benedict, played by Luke Thompson, and Francesca , played by Hannah Dodd, and seeing them explore their sexuality). Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh) would applaud the strategy of keeping things enticing.

And yet, in the middle of something like Whistledown, something like a ton, could there have been more kisses? Any other sweet moments from what grew out of their many years of friendship? Did I miss an episode where this happened more?

I wanted to see Colin adore Penelope, fight even harder for her, prove that he loved both her mind and her body instead of letting her do most of the work and just accepting it.

I'm looking forward to next season.
