Pedestrian killed by train near rural neighborhood

GRANT-VALKARIA — A pedestrian was killed Friday evening in a collision with a train in a rural residential area here, police said Sunday.

Brevard County sheriff's officials did not say what type of train it was, nor did they identify the person by gender, age or location. The pedestrian is the eighth person killed by a train in Brevard County since October.

The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. Friday near the intersection of Old Dixie Highway and Shell Pit Road in a rural residential area of Grant-Valkaria. Brevard County firefighters responded to the scene within minutes. The person was pronounced deceased at the scene and the remains were turned over to the medical examiner's office. An autopsy was to be performed this week.
