Peacock Fire grows to 100 acres, officials say

MOHAVE COUNTY, Ariz. — Officials say fire crews are battling a new wildfire, the Peacock Fire, burning 20 miles northeast of Kingman in the Peacock Mountains.

The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management said the fire broke out around noon Monday and initially burned 50 acres, but has since grown to 100 acres. The fire burns grass and pinyon juniper in a remote, hard-to-reach location. Authorities say activity was minimal at the start of the fire, but has intensified and the fire is moving northeast.

Officials say the Peacock Fire was running into a nearby road, but crews are conducting shooting operations to keep the fire in place.

Four single-engine air tankers are attacking the boundaries of the fire, and additional engines, including water tenders and hand crews, have been rushed to the ground.
