Chicago police said that shortly after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, a 67-year-old food vendor was approached by two people in the 10700 block of South Ewing, who pulled out guns and opened fire.

Two female victims were also at the scene of the shooting, but they were not injured, police said.

A witness described hearing an argument over the dollar price of ice cream the vendor was selling outside a grocery store before hearing gunshots.

“It's incredible. A life for a dollar?” said witness Dave Johnson. “Hit for a dollar? No, it's crazy. I heard two guys arguing really loudly. I mean, I could hear them from a block away. Then all of a sudden I heard: “pow!” I went to the corner of my terrace and looked down the street and saw a guy lying on the grass. He was shot in the leg.

The man who was shot, investigators said, was a 67-year-old food vendor, who remained on the ground injured while two suspects tried to run away, but they didn't make it far. Chicago police and SWAT officers swarmed 108th and Ewing.

“Obviously he didn’t pay the dollar or it was too much for him,” Johnson said.

The ice cream seller was taken to University of Chicago Hospital in good condition while the two suspects ran into a nearby home, police said, leading to a barricade and shooting situation. standoff that lasted hours before their arrest.

Police only announced charges against Redd, but it was unclear whether charges would be filed against the other suspect.

Redd was scheduled to appear in court for a hearing on Saturday.
