Pastor attacks wife for alleged infidelity, files for divorce

Modupe, wife of the founder and senior pastor of a Lagos State-based evangelical ministry, identified simply as Akintunde, has accused the cleric of assaulting her following allegations of infidelity she made against him at their residence in Onosa community, Ibeju-Lekki local. State government area.

PUNCH Metro It was learned that the couple's marriage, blessed with five children, started experiencing difficulties when Modupe, on different occasions, accused her husband of having a romantic affair with two church members.

Angered by the allegations, Modupe claimed that her husband allegedly slapped and beat her, adding that during one of the attacks, she lost consciousness and was later hospitalized.

She said her marriage collapsed when her husband, who accused her of causing church members to resign following the adultery allegations, kicked her out of their marital home and sought to divorce.

Modupe said: “What provoked the fight was because I accused him of adultery with female members of the church. I discovered he was having an illicit affair with two female church members, but when I confronted him, he threatened me and beat me.

“The first time I learned that he was having an illicit affair with a female member of the church was when I contracted an infection from him. I confronted him about the infection and he told me he was also experiencing similar symptoms.

“We called our nurse and she took care of us. The same nurse also treated a female church member for the same infection and informed me about it. This is how I learned of their love affair.

Modupe said after confronting her husband, their relationship deteriorated, adding that instead of doing things to improve the situation, the pastor allegedly entered into another illicit romantic relationship with another female member of the church .

She said: “This second incident of confrontation with my husband over alleged adultery with another female member of the church happened last year. The fiancé of the female church member learned of the illicit affairs and informed some members who stopped worshiping in our church.

“My husband started saying that I was using the adultery allegations to get church members to leave, even though it was the fiancé of the church member he was romantically involved with. He got angry and ordered me to pack my bags. I didn't agree because I had nowhere to go.

“But for my safety, I was advised to give him space. I left with a few loads and returned around December 2023 to spend the holidays with my children. When he realized I was at home, he locked me in one of the rooms for two hours, despite the pleas of one of my children.

The midwife said she left the house and returned in January 2024, adding that during the month of April she was at her marital home when she gave birth to her child. a woman and that her husband, who was determined to make her leave the house, allegedly attacked her until she passed out.

She said: “He slapped me and squeezed my neck until I passed out. I woke up with water all over my body. I also saw that people had gathered around me. He kept saying that I had stayed in the house too long and that he wanted me to leave, when it wasn't just his money that we were using to build the property. I also contributed my money when we started building the property and the church.

“I left home to get treatment. I spent a week in the hospital and as I speak to you, I am still going to the hospital for treatment from home. It hasn't been easy to eat because my neck still hurts. It was our neighbors who called my family members, who came to take me to the hospital after I regained consciousness.

Akintunde, when contacted, denied the allegations, but noted that efforts were being made to divorce his wife.

He said: “I didn’t attack her; She was the one who wanted to hurt and kill me that day and I have my proof. She wanted to cut off my private parts. She once told me that if my organ didn't work for her, it wouldn't work for anyone.

“She reported the case to the Epe division; She should sue me, I have my proof. We went to Epe Division and when we were asked to meet at the court on Monday May 6, 2024, I went there but she and her family members did not come.

On the allegation of romance with female church members, Akintunde said: “I am a pastor and I have a congregation and she used to intimidate everyone she saw me with. I wanted a divorce and she had already packed her load out of the house, but she returned it later.

As for the allegation that she contracted an infection from a nurse and infected her, Akintunde said: “She is not well. Thank God the nurse is still alive. She goes beyond her abilities. If it weren't for our children, I would have taken her to criminal court. I want a divorce and the matter is already in court.

When contacted, State Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed that the matter had been taken to court.

He said: “The matter came before the court last Thursday. There was evidence that he (Akintunde) had assaulted his wife and it was on this basis that we took the matter to court.
