Parents of teen shooting suspect charged by police

ASHEBORO — Asheboro police say they have charged both parents of the 16-year-old suspect in the fatal shooting of Pedro Ortiz-Perez with helping the suspect avoid arrest.

On May 23, Asheboro police obtained arrest warrants for the mother and father of the 16-year-old suspect in the fatal shooting of Pedro Ortiz-Perez, for helping the suspect evade arrest.

Pedro Ortiz-Perez, a 16-year-old who attended Southwest Randolph High School and played on the football team, was seriously injured in a shooting near North Asheboro Park on May 3. He remained in critical condition at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill until he succumbed to his injuries and died on May 15. In a statement following the shooting, police said they did not believe Ortiz-Perez was the intended target.

The suspect, another 16-year-old, was arrested in Statesville, North Carolina, on May 10 and faces charges of attempted murder, discharging a firearm into a vehicle and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill/inflict serious injury. The Asheboro Police Department said it plans to present enhanced charges to the Grand Jury for indictment later this month.

May 24thin a press release, the ministry indicates that it has charged both parents of the suspect with the crime of accessory after the fact.

The mother, Denisse Vera-Covarrubias, 43, was found at her home. She was taken into custody and then transported to the Randolph County Jail where she was charged with accessory after the fact and issued a $25,000 secured bond.

The father, 38-year-old Alfredo Martinez Ramirez, turned himself in to the Randolph County Jail and was also charged with accessory after the fact and posted a $30,000 secured bond.
