Paper towels catch fire at Charlotte Harris Teeter, prompting evacuation – WSOC TV

CHARLOTTE — A Harris Teeter was evacuated Monday evening when paper towels caught fire in one of the grocery store's aisles, Charlotte Fire said.

It happened shortly before 5:30 p.m. at the store on Smith Farm Road in northwest Charlotte.

A Charlotte Fire spokesperson said the building was already evacuated when firefighters arrived at the store. When crews went inside, they found an aisle with paper towel rolls on fire. The fire was then partially extinguished.

Firefighters extinguished the remaining flames and removed smoldering paper towels from the store, the spokesperson said.

Crews ventilated the store to remove remaining smoke.

The investigation is looking into the causes of the fire. It's unclear how much damage the fire caused or whether anyone will be charged.

In a statement, a Harris Teeter spokesperson said no one was injured and they planned to reopen at 6 a.m. Tuesday.

“Our teams are actively working with first responders, the health department and a third-party restoration company to ensure we can reopen as quickly and safely as possible,” the statement said. “We are grateful that there were no injuries and we commend our valued associates for their quick and safe response.” We plan to reopen tomorrow at 6am. »
