Palm City brush fires affect more than 100 acres; residents return home

PALM CITY −For two days, Martin County fire crews battled brush fires Friday evening that spread to more than 100 total acres of a wooded area west of Palm City and led to the evacuation of some neighboring homes, firefighters said.

What is happening: The fires started Wednesday and fire officials said embers were suspected to have sparked new fires, increasing the total area burned from 30 to more than 100 acres Friday. Firefighters evacuated some neighboring homes Friday evening.

Firefighters said shortly before 8 p.m. that there was no longer a threat to nearby homes and some residents had been allowed to return to their homes. No injuries or damage to residences or structures were reported, said Cory Pippin, spokesman for the Martin County Fire Department.
