Palm Bay teen shot in the head returns from hospital and continues recovery

PALM BAY, Florida. — Months after police say a 26-year-old man shot five members of his family, killing three of them, the youngest survivor is no longer on life support and recovering at home.

Kamauri Curry's family invited News 6's James Sparvero to witness the 15-year-old's remarkable progress just five months after he was shot in the head at the Woodlake Village Apartments.

Police said Curry's uncle, Ta'Shawn Taylor, killed Curry's grandparents and aunt on Jan. 20.

The family said Taylor suffered from mental illness and the state is seeking the death penalty in its prosecution.

On Tuesday, Curry said he felt good to be back home with his father, Chari Curry.

“It's nice to be with your family, the people that love you, and it's just great,” Kamauri Curry said.

Kamauri Curry's father said the family is currently focused on getting the teen back to as normal a life as possible.

Kamauri Curry played basketball at Wade Christian Academy in Melbourne.

“Basically, get back to it right away,” Chari Curry said. “Get him back on the field immediately, he'll be his old self again, you know, a 15-year-old kid. I'm just happy the man is here.

Kamauri Curry said surviving taught him to never give up.

“It taught me to keep going and not stop to be who I am,” the teen said, attributing his positivity to his family.

Chari Curry said he also learned a lot about resilience.

“It taught me a lot about being patient and loving and being there for your child, you know, more than ever,” the father said.

Kamauri Curry and his father also told me they would like to thank everyone who donated towards the boy's recovery.

Currently, this recovery includes weekly physical therapy and later, starting in ninth grade.

Kamauri is also looking forward to playing basketball again.
