Palestinians say teenager killed by Israeli troops in West Bank

Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian teenager in the occupied West Bank on Saturday, Palestinian news agency Wafa reported, as the army confirmed opening fire on two suspects.

Ashraf Hmedat, 15, was killed during an Israeli raid on the Aqabat Jabr refugee camp near Jericho, Wafa said.

Ashraf Hmedat, 15, was killed during an Israeli raid on the Aqabat Jabr refugee camp near Jericho, Wafa said.

The Israeli military said two suspects threw Molotov cocktails towards the nearby settlement of Vered Yeriho, endangering civilians and property.

“(Israeli) soldiers present in the area responded by firing live ammunition at the suspects. Shots were identified,” the army said.

The condition of the second person is unclear, Wafa said.

The West Bank, occupied by Israel since 1967, has experienced an upsurge in violence for more than a year, but particularly since the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas on October 7.

At least 520 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank by Israeli troops or settlers since the start of the Gaza war, according to Palestinian officials.

Palestinian attacks killed at least 14 Israelis in the West Bank over the same period, according to an AFP count based on official Israeli figures.
