Pacific Surfliner train services delayed in San Diego after Sorrento Valley incident – ​​NBC 7 San Diego

Train traffic came to a halt Friday afternoon in San Diego's Sorrento Valley when a Pacific Surfliner struck and killed a teenage cyclist, according to an Amtrak official.

“On June 14, Amtrak train 770 was traveling from Goleta, California, to San Diego at approximately 12:45 p.m. when an individual trespassing on the track came into contact with the train in the city of San Diego,” Amtrak said . » said in a statement released later in the afternoon. “No injuries were reported among the 254 passengers or crew on board.”

Around 5:30 p.m., the San Diego Sheriff's Department released the following information about how the boy was killed:

Witnesses told deputies that three boys on bicycles were stopped at the crossing to allow a northbound train to pass. After the northbound train passed, a 17-year-old boy cycled across the tracks, not realizing that there was also a southbound train passing by. The boy was hit by the train and did not survive his injuries. The other two cyclists were not injured.

The Amtrak official said that when San Diego police and firefighters responded to the scene, they found the teen on the train tracks and that he had died at the scene.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released by authorities.

The incident occurred near the intersection of Sorrento Valley Boulevard and Roselle Street.

The train service warned passengers at 2:04 p.m. to expect long delays until further notice following “intruder activity.” Shortly after 6 p.m., NBC 7 confirmed that train service had resumed.

San Diego Sheriff's deputies are on scene investigating the incident. The Amtrak official said the agency was working with local law enforcement on the investigation.
