Outer Banks lightning sparks fire in Corolla, North Carolina

COROLLA, N.C. (WNCN) — A lightning strike ignited a fire that severely damaged a beach house on North Carolina's Outer Banks Monday morning, officials said.

The fire was reported around 6:45 a.m. at a three-story home in the 900 block of Corolla Drive in the Whalehead area of ​​Currituck County, according to reports.


Flames were visible coming from the roof when crews from the Corolla Fire & Rescue Squad arrived at the vacation rental home.

Ten people who had rented the house were inside at the time of the fire, according to Sam Walker of OBXNews.

Nine people quickly left the home, but one man was briefly trapped inside the home, but quickly escaped, Walker reported.

It took several firefighters more than 20 minutes to bring the fire under control.

The fire was not put out until an hour later, Walker reported.

People vacationing in the home were moved to another home, according to the Corolla Fire & Rescue Squad.

In addition to Corolla Fire, the Duck Fire Department, Kitty Hawk Fire and Southern Shores Volunteer Fire Department assisted, officials said.

No one was hurt.
