OU transfer receiver Deion Burks arrested

Oklahoma wide receiver Deion Burks faces a misdemeanor criminal charge in Cleveland County, according to a filing Tuesday with the Oklahoma State Court System.

According to OSCN, the charge against Burks is a misdemeanor count and the case has been assigned to Judge Scott Brockman.

OU Insider and SoonerScoop.com, citing an affidavit obtained from the Cleveland County Clerk of Court's office, reported Wednesday that Burks faces charges of speeding, carrying an open container and driving under the influence .

According to these reports, Burks was stopped near I-35 and Indian Hills Road at 2:40 a.m. on June 1 after he was observed driving nearly 25 miles above the speed limit and having suddenly changed lanes without signaling.

The arresting officer allegedly observed an empty tequila bottle in the passenger floor of the car and Burks admitted to the officer that he had two shots of hard liquor at a nightclub and that he was going home.

A breathalyzer test reportedly revealed that Burks' blood alcohol level was above the legal limit. He was reportedly arrested at 2:54 a.m. and booked into the Cleveland County Detention Center at 3:25 a.m.

“We are aware of the issue and it is being addressed internally,” an OU athletic department spokesperson said in a statement provided to the Tulsa World.

The news comes the same day OU sophomore cornerback Makari Vickers was arrested by the OU Police Department. OUPD has yet to respond to Tulsa World's request for more information on the situation.

Burks transferred to OU during the winter portal window after playing three seasons at Purdue. He recorded 47 receptions for 629 yards and seven touchdowns last season.

Following rave reviews of his performance during OU's spring practices, Burks looked like a star in the making as he had five catches for 174 yards and two touchdowns in the Sooners' spring game on April 20.

Burks was expected to take over as the starting wide receiver in the fall, leading OU to its first season in the Southeastern Conference as one of the best players on the roster and a potential first-round draft pick in the NFL.
