Orange County teen dies in collision while walking to school

A high school student died in a collision that injured four other people while walking to school in Orange County Tuesday morning.

The collision happened around 8:15 a.m. at the intersection of Yorba Linda Boulevard and Valencia Avenue in the town of Placentia, according to police.

Authorities tell KTLA 5's Chip Yost that the teen, an 11th grader at El Dorado High School, was driving a 1984 Corvette with another minor passenger when the car was apparently struck by a Range Rover driven by a 39-year-old woman with two minor passengers.

It was not immediately known whether any of the drivers ran a red light at the intersection.

The teenage driver of the Corvette was trapped inside the vehicle and seriously injured. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital, police said. His passenger was able to escape without his life being in danger.

No one in the Range Rover was seriously injured.

The name of the teen who died was not immediately released.

“Our entire school district is overwhelmed with indescribable grief,” the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District said in a statement. “During this incredibly difficult time, we ask for your compassion to respect the privacy of our students’ loved ones and to keep them in your thoughts and prayers.”

Police are seeking dashcam footage from all drivers who were in the area at the time of the collision.
