Ongoing 'problems' between teens and adults led to Herriman's fatal stabbing

HERRIMAN, Utah — New details shed light on what led to a 16-year-old being fatally stabbed in Herriman after a high school graduation ceremony Wednesday.

A police report released Thursday did not identify the victim or most of those arrested because of their ages, but said they were students from Valley High School and Mountain Ridge High School.

One of the people involved in the incident, Keith McClendon, 19, was arrested for aggravated assault and was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.

The new report says the teenage victim, McClendon and two others went to Valley High School's graduation ceremony to confront two students from the school.

“There have been ongoing, documented problems between these individuals, and this is at least the third similar fight between them in the past year,” police said in the report.

During the incident, the victim was stabbed in the chest.

When emergency responders arrived in the area near Zions Bank Stadium and Real Salt Lake Training Academy, they found the 16-year-old victim in the driver's seat of a Dodge Challenger. The teenager died instantly.

After the fight, several of those involved fled the scene in an Audi vehicle, which was later located at 13643 South Daggerwing Way in Riverton. Due to the history of those involved, the South Valley SWAT team was called in to arrest those involved.

Two other people involved, a 17-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman, were transported to a nearby hospital by family members. Their injuries are not life-threatening, particularly to the face and hand.

McClendon was eventually apprehended at the scene of the first incident.

Another 18-year-old man fled the home and remains at large, although police do not believe there is a threat to the public.
