Oneida County Sheriffs Welcome “Jensen” to K-9 Unit

ORISKANY, N.Y. (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — The Oneida County Sheriffs welcomed the third of three new furry officers to their ranks on Thursday, June 6.

Jensen was introduced to the Oneida County Sheriffs' K9 unit at their Oriskany office Wednesday. He is a 15 month old Dutch Shepherd and is partnered with Lt. John Cusack. Lt. Cusack has been with the K-9 unit since 2015, whose former partner, Natalie, recently retired from the force.

When choosing the name for the new furry officer, the sheriff's office contacted the parents of Syracuse police officer and Rome native Michael Jensen to name him. Jensen was killed in the line of duty on April 14.

“This is a way for us to always remember Officer Jensen’s life and the career he dedicated so much to. Thank you to the Sheriff for doing this today,” Syracuse Police Chief Joseph Cecile said in a statement.

Jensen's parents, Paul and Michelle, were on hand to introduce Jensen to the Oneida County sheriffs.

Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. said, “Oneida County is pleased to welcome Jensen to our K-9 ranks,” said Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente , in a press release. “Naming this majestic animal after fallen Syracuse Police Officer Michael Jensen is a beautiful way to honor his legacy and provide some comfort to his department, his family and the Rome community during this time difficult.”
