One person killed in shooting at Newport Beach mall, police chase

One person was killed after a shooting outside a Newport Beach, California, shopping mall Tuesday afternoon, according to reports.

Newport Beach police said a possible shooting occurred near the Fashion Island Shopping Center around 4:00 p.m. and asked people on X (formerly Twitter) to avoid the area.

Firefighters found a dead person in the parking lot outside the Barnes & Noble mall, according to CBS News and KNBC.

Two people were shot and injured, and an elderly woman died, while the other victim was seriously injured, KTTV reported.

USA TODAY has reached out to the Newport Beach police and fire departments for confirmation.

Suspect arrested after high-speed police chase

Shortly after the shooting, officers followed the alleged suspects, leading to a police chase from Orange County to Los Angeles County, according to CBS News. Two of the suspects jumped from the vehicle near Los Alamito and evaded arrest, CBS News reported.

The other suspects drove the car west on Interstate 105 at speeds of up to 110 mph before exiting, CBS News reported. Then, two other suspects jumped out of the vehicle and fled to South Gate.

Police located one of the suspects hiding behind trash cans inside a home, CBS News reported.
