One person hospitalized, suspect in custody after shooting at Pembroke Pines hair salon

PEMBROKE PINES – There were scary moments at a Pembroke Pines shopping center Friday afternoon, where police said a man was shot and killed inside a barber shop.

It happened at Halftime Barber at 15677 Pines Boulevard west of I-75.

Police said the suspect and victim worked at the hairdresser before the victim was fired.

Authorities said Friday that he returned to the store and confronted his former co-worker. Following that confrontation, the suspect fired a single shot.

The accused shooter, identified as Jesus Santiago Zabala, 29, was quickly arrested by responding officers.

The business was cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape as investigators tried to figure out why this shooting happened.

Hair salon employees said they did not wish to comment.

Capt. Adam Feiner of the Pembroke Pines Police Department said the shooter was arrested and the victim was transported to the hospital for emergency treatment.

Feiner said the shooting involved only the two people and there was no threat to the community.

A second crime scene was also located at a nearby Publix supermarket, where witnesses said the victim fled after being shot.

Nicolette Gitelman works at a nearby hair salon and she told CBS News Miami's Peter D'Oench: “Around 1:30 p.m. I heard gunshots, like gunshots. It was pretty cold for 5 minutes, then I heard the cops and I heard sirens and they all ran here and the cops ran here with guns and they came into the barbershop.”

Gitelman said, “They started taking people out of the barbershop and questioning them. »

She said: “I'm terrified. I'm shaking. It was quite unbelievable that something like that could happen.”

Pembroke Pines firefighters transported the gunshot victim to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.
