One person dead after Missoula shooting; Suspect arrested following standoff | Missoula News

UPDATE: TUESDAY at 7:28 a.m.

A man is dead following reports of a shooting in the 1700 block of South Eighth Street West in Missoula Monday evening.

The Missoula Police Department (MPD) said in a news release that officers performed lifesaving measures on a 56-year-old man who was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Witnesses told police that suspect John “Joan” Eikens, 35, came home with a gun and barricaded himself inside, according to MPD.

SWAT, Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) and detectives responded to the standoff.

CNT attempted to contact the suspect several times over several hours, but was unsuccessful.

SWAT used non-lethal techniques to apprehend the suspect, including chemical agents and sound distraction devices, MPD said.

Eikens was arrested around 11 p.m. without further incident.

MPD said this was an isolated incident and there was no ongoing danger to the public.

“The Missoula Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time,” MPD said in the release.

Police arrested the suspect in the 1700 block of South Eighth Street West in Missoula.

The Missoula Police Department told NonStop Local that a suspect was barricaded inside a home and police asked him to come out.

MPD said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The investigation is ongoing.
