One person dead after being shot by Wood County sheriff's deputy

The Wood County Sheriff's Office reports that the incident occurred shortly before 1 a.m. on Sunday, June 16.

WOOD COUNTY, Ohio — The Wood County Sheriff's Office says one of its deputies shot and killed a man during an altercation at 12:52 a.m. Sunday, June 16.

According to the Wood County Sheriff's Office, authorities went to a rural address near the village of Rudolph for a health and welfare check. Authorities say a call was made to Wood County Dispatch saying the person at the address was suicidal.

Deputies said when they arrived, they attempted to deescalate the situation, but during those attempts, the individual allegedly pointed a gun at a deputy.

The sheriff's office said the deputy fired his handgun once in response, shooting the individual.

Responding officers said they immediately attempted first aid, including CPR, but the victim died.

The identity of the victim and details of the incident have not yet been released.

The identity of the deputy who fired his handgun has also not been released.

The Wood County Sheriff's Office requested BCI&I investigate the shooting. The Wood County Sheriff's Department did not say whether the deputy would be placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
