One person convicted in shooting at Dutchtown Popeyes | Courts

A St. Gabriel man admitted to shooting into a crowd inside the Popeyes in Dutchtown last fall, damaging the restaurant, has been sentenced to two years in state prison, according to court documents.

Jayden Junius, 21, is one of at least two suspects in the early evening shooting at the fried chicken chain Oct. 14, according to court documents.

Ascension Parish sheriff's deputies said at the time that one person was injured in the shooting, which happened shortly before 4:50 p.m. at the restaurant on 73rd Street, southwest of the 'Interstate-10.

A store employee told an arriving deputy that two men had entered the restaurant and were involved in a shooting with another store employee, according to the sheriff's report.

The deputy quickly found and arrested that employee, Kevontae Miley, who was walking through a parking lot toward La. 73, the report states.

Miley, who is also from St. Gabriel, faces charges of attempted second-degree murder, unlawful use and possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of a weapon fired by a minor, according to court documents.

Miley, who was 17 at the time of the shooting but is being prosecuted as an adult, later told detectives he acted in self-defense after receiving a warning call from his brother, according to the sheriff's report.

The brother allegedly told Miley that “several subjects” were “live streaming video of her work,” the report states.

The deputy who reported stopping Miley in the parking lot found a gun in her waistband, under her shirt and restaurant apron.

Miley, who is due back in court on June 25, has pleaded not guilty to the charges against her.

Judge Cody Martin of the 23rd Judicial District Court sentenced Junius on May 29 under a plea agreement he and prosecutors reached.

Junius pleaded guilty to unlawful use of a weapon and prosecutors dropped additional charges of criminal damage to property and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, according to court records.

Attempts Tuesday and Thursday to reach prosecutors, and on Thursday to reach defense attorneys for Junius and Miley, were unsuccessful.
