Police lights flash in the background of a crime scene marked off with police tape.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Investigations are underway after a deadly fight between two men in Lawrence, Kansas, Tuesday evening, according to the Lawrence Police Department.

LPD said that shortly after 10:30 p.m., police were called to the intersection of East 25th Terrace and Franklin Road after witnesses saw two men physically fighting.

Police say a Douglas County Sheriff's Office deputy was first on scene and saw the two men on the ground, with one of them unconscious.

After other law enforcement arrived, officers arrested 34-year-old George Luke Miller and began rendering aid to 43-year-old Christopher Allen Lickteig.

Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Lickteig was unable to regain consciousness and was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to LPD, Miller was taken to police headquarters for questioning and then arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder.

Investigators notified the victim's next of kin and later discovered both men were residents of the Lawrence Community Shelter.

Police said the circumstances leading to the fight were still unknown, including whether Lickteig and Miller knew each other. They also said detectives did not believe weapons were involved in the fight, nor did they recover any.
