One killed, two injured in crash near Haines City

POLK COUNTY, FLORIDA – A three-vehicle crash Wednesday near Haines City killed a woman and left two others seriously injured, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

The crash happened around 3:47 p.m. on U.S. 27 at Morrison Ranch Road, the sheriff's office said on social media.

The driver of a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt, identified as Katrina Moore, 64, of Haines City, lost control of the vehicle while traveling south on U.S. 27 and crossed the median, entering the northbound lanes and striking a 2023 Dodge Durango in a head-on collision that ejected Moore from the Chevrolet, the station said. After the impact, both vehicles collided with a 1997 Kenworth truck, deputies said.

Moore was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff's office. The two occupants of the Dodge — a 63-year-old Winter Haven man who was driving and a 59-year-old Orlando woman who was the passenger — were taken to a hospital to be treated for serious injuries, cops said.

The 54-year-old Orlando man driving the Kenworth truck was not injured, deputies said, adding that everyone involved in the crash was wearing seat belts except Moore.

According to the sheriff's office, two lanes of southbound U.S. Highway 27 were closed for about four hours, while the northbound lanes were closed for about four and a half hours.

An investigation is reportedly underway.
