One dead, several injured in knife attack at Euro party in Germany

A knifeman killed one person and seriously injured two others during a rampage at a Euro party in East Germany before being shot dead by police.

The man entered a garden in the town of Magdeburg where a family was hosting a private party to watch Germany's opening match against Scotland.

In the garden, the attacker stabbed at least three football fans. Two of them were seriously injured.

After he tried to attack police officers who arrived at the scene, a police officer shot him, German daily Bild reported.

The man is also suspected of killing another man in a high-rise building near the scene of the attack before going on a rampage.

He then threatened residents of a small garden colony, who managed to alert the police.

It is unclear whether the attack is considered a possible terrorist incident.

Germany is on high alert for the possibility of terrorist attacks during the next four weeks of football festivities.

In March, Berlin announced it would carry out checks at all its borders to prevent possible terrorist attacks.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said: “We are guarding against all imaginable dangers with the maximum commitment of the security authorities.

“Our focus ranges from the Islamist terrorist threat to hooligans and cyberattacks. The federal police will protect Germany's borders, airports and rail traffic,” she said.

Germany has recently seen a sharp increase in knife crime.

Earlier this month, a radicalized asylum seeker from Afghanistan attacked and killed a police officer in the city of Mannheim after the officer tried to stop him from attacking people in the street.
