One dead after officer-involved shooting in southern Jordan

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (ABC4) — One person died Saturday after a police-involved shooting at a South Jordan park, according to a news release from the South Jordan Police Department.

Police said officers responded to Skye Park after receiving a call about a “suspicious person” allegedly looking through car windows.

“The person was located at a park in the area and produced a knife when contacted by officers,” police said in the release.

Officers allegedly used “less lethal force” in an attempt to arrest the suspect, who did not cooperate when officers spoke to them, police said.

“After several attempts to obtain obedience proved ineffective, the individual advanced towards the officers with the knife and was shot and killed,” police said.

The suspect was then taken into custody and transported to hospital, but died at the hospital.

Police said the investigation is expected to continue Saturday afternoon and the areas of Skye Drive and Skye Park will remain closed throughout the investigation.

The incident remains under investigation by the Officer-Involved Critical Incident Team, and the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, according to the police department.

Police did not immediately release information about the time the incident occurred.

There is no further information at this time.
