Officer, suspect injured after shooting outside Hickory pub: police

HICKORY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A police officer and suspect are recovering from gunshot wounds after shots were fired near a pub early Sunday morning, according to the Hickory Police Department.

Shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to several shots fired coming from the area of ​​the Gateway Pub at 534 Highway 70 Southwest.


When they arrived, they attempted to arrest an armed man and take him into custody. While in custody, a second gunman shot at officers, officials said. A police officer was hit twice by the suspect.

Police say an assisting officer responded and fired his firearm, striking the suspect.

The injured officer was transported to a local hospital where he is expected to recover. The injured suspect was flown to another medical center where he remains in critical condition.

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the results of the NCSBI investigation, officials said.

The Hickory Police Department is investigating the first shooting at the Gateway Pub. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Hickory Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division.
