Officer-involved shooting early Wednesday leaves suspect dead

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – A man is dead after shooting at police early Wednesday morning, however, several people being held captive are safe, according to the Jacksonville Police Department.

Jacksonville police said officers were called to a home at 701 New River Drive at 1:36 a.m. for shots fired and a report of a domestic disturbance.

Police say an armed man barricaded himself in the home with six other people.

The police tactical team and negotiators were called to the scene, and the six people were able to escape from the house through a side window.

While helping people out the window, officials say the gunman left the back of the house and opened fire. Authorities say officers returned fire, striking and killing the suspect at the scene.
