Officer, civilian killed, 4 others injured in shooting on Arizona reservation (police)

An officer and a civilian were killed while another officer and three others were injured in a shooting in Arizona's Gila River Indian Community early Saturday morning, police said.

Officers were responding to an incident involving a large crowd at a home in the Santan, District 4 community around 2 a.m. local time when several shots were fired, according to the Gila River Police Department.

A total of six people were shot during the incident, including Officer Joshua Briese, who died of his injuries at the hospital, police said. Briese had been on the police force for less than a year and was still in field training, according to police.

An unidentified person who was shot was also pronounced dead at the scene, police said. An unidentified officer was struck and remains in serious but stable condition in hospital, according to police.

The three other civilians shot were also recovering in hospital, police said.

No suspects have been named and no arrests have been made Saturday evening, according to investigators.

The investigation into the shooting, which is now being assisted by the FBI, continues.

Braise's father was also an officer who died in the line of duty in a car accident in 2006, according to ABC affiliate KNXV.

Gale River Indian Community Governor Stephen Roe Lewis offered his condolences to the victims.

“I know I speak for our entire community when I say we mourn our fallen and injured police officers and all community members affected by such tragic violence. Nothing is more profound than a life cut short. We “We will pray for our police officers and their families, and for every member of the community, every loved one and every family affected by what happened this morning,” he said in a statement.
