Off-duty state trooper arrested for alleged assault

An off-duty state trooper from the Uniontown barracks was arrested Sunday morning after allegedly breaking into a home and assaulting a man.

James Terrance Stevenson Jr., 29, of Connellsville, is charged by state police in Waynesburg with felony counts of aggravated assault and burglary.

According to the criminal complaint, around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Stevenson broke into a home in the 1000 block of Oak Street, Connellsville and assaulted Neil Gray Jr. in his bedroom. Court documents accuse Stevenson of beating him to the point that he lost consciousness.

Police say a woman was also in the room with Gray. Stevenson allegedly grabbed her by the shoulders, shook her and told her to leave with him.

As Stevenson tried to drive away from the scene, Gray's father reached out the driver's side window to grab him, police said. Court records say Stevenson opened the door, causing him to fall to the ground.

Gray was transported to Highlands Hospital. According to the complaint, he suffered multiple facial injuries.

State police issued a news release Tuesday saying Stevenson had been suspended without pay. Police said he was free after posting $20,000 bail.

Stevenson also faces a misdemeanor charge of simple assault and multiple citations for harassment and criminal mischief.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 4 at 10 a.m.
