Off-duty San Angelo police detective arrested for drunken driving

An off-duty San Angelo police detective was arrested early Friday morning on suspicion of drunken driving, according to a police news release.

At approximately 12:56 a.m. on Friday, July 4, Detective James Hernandez was booked into the Tom Green County Jail on a charge of driving while intoxicated (second offense) by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Hernandez was released Friday on $1,500 bail, jail records show.

“A Texas DPS trooper conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Detective Hernandez, resulting in the arrest of a 54-year-old man,” according to a news release. “Any inquiries regarding the arrest should be directed to the Texas Department of Public Safety.”

Following the arrest, SAPD opened a formal internal investigation with the Office of Professional Standards.

“Hernandez, a seventeen-year veteran of the San Angelo Police Department, was off-duty when the incident occurred,” the statement said.

He was released from prison at 11:38 a.m. the same day.

Everyone charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
