Off-duty MPD officer arrested and charged with drunk driving after parking lot crash

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis police officer was arrested after police say he was driving under the influence when he crashed into a car in a parking lot.

According to an affidavit, Joshua Bowles was arrested around 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, public intoxication and reckless driving.

Officers responded to Premium Parking at 21 Second Street, where a woman reported she was driving her car into the garage when a black Dodge Charger struck the right side of her vehicle.

Reports indicate officers arrived on scene and found the Dodge Charger stopped in the middle of the road while still driving, with the driver's side door open and the driver asleep at the wheel.

The officer woke the driver and asked for identification. The man allegedly gave officers a credit card instead of his ID, but was later identified as Bowles.

Police said Bowles was confused and informed officers he was tired and had just gotten off work. Several sobriety tests were conducted, but he reportedly failed all of them.

MPD confirmed that Bowles has been relieved of duty pending the results of the investigation.

He was released on recognizance and is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning.
