Off-duty BSO deputy killed in motorcycle accident

SUNRISE, Florida – An off-duty Broward Sheriff's Office deputy was killed in a motorcycle crash Thursday in Sunrise.

Scattered car parts and debris littered Pine Island Road, just north of Northwest 44th Street, after the serious crash left two people injured and one dead.

Authorities said the fatal crash happened around 12:19 p.m.

That's when, according to witnesses, the motorcyclist hit a car that was trying to turn onto Springtree Lakes Drive.

The two women in that vehicle – a mother and her adult daughter – were rushed to an area hospital to be treated for their injuries while the man on that motorcycle died despite first responders trying to save his life.

Relatives identified the victim as Anthony Zahorovsky, 27, a deputy with the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Family members said Zahorovsky said he was the father of a baby boy and that his wife was expecting their second child.

“He was very family-oriented, a good father,” said Catherine Ruiz, the victim’s cousin. “He was always there for all of us. I was going to see him in the next few hours. We were going to spend time together for the Fourth of July and he was on his way to get groceries.”

The Broward Deputy Sheriffs Association, the union that represents deputies, learned of the tragedy and released a statement that read, in part:

“During this difficult time, we extend our deepest condolences, thoughts, prayers and continued support to Anthony’s family. May they find strength in the memories of Anthony’s life and the positive impact he had on those around him.”

A police escort followed Zahorovsky's body as it was transported to the medical examiner's office.
