Off-duty Aurora captain saves dog from fire before crews arrive

DENVER (KDVR) — Aurora Fire Rescue extinguished a carport fire Tuesday morning that threatened other nearby structures and, in doing so, rescued a dog from the building.

According to the agency's social media, crews were dispatched to a structure fire in the 3600 block of South Fairplay Way in Aurora around 11:20 a.m. They discovered a fire in a four-unit residential building, but before they even arrived on scene, an off-duty firefighter was already at work.

The agency said an off-duty Aurora fire captain rescued a dog from the structure before firefighters could get to the site. Crews identified the fire in a detached carport that threatened nearby homes.

They were able to extinguish the fire quickly and searched the building for possible victims. No injuries have been reported and no one will be displaced by the fire, according to the agency.

At this time, the causes of the fire are still under investigation.
